New Hampshire Sports Betting

|

Updated:

New Hampshire sports betting officially became legal in July 2019, and the first bets were placed in early 2020. Despite being one of the first states to offer legal sports betting, there has not been much growth since that time.

DraftKings is the only sportsbook operating in the state. DraftKings offers a deposit bonus up to $1000 and a $50 bonus bet with first deposit.

New Hampshire online sports betting is also available, but there is currently just one online sportsbook offered in the state. New legislation could make changes to the New Hampshire sports betting laws,

Even though there aren’t any professional teams located in the state of New Hampshire, sports fans in the state have plenty of other “local” teams to root for. New Hampshire sports betting will never be a huge market, but there are at least options for bettors in the state.

When New Hampshire first legalized sports betting, both in-person and online sports betting was included in that law. New Hampshire sports betting was the first to launch, but it was followed up by some retail sports betting options.

Initially, it was believed that up to five different sports betting operators would be allowed to enter the NH sports betting market, but DraftKings was able to secure exclusive market access. DraftKings launched NH online sports betting in early 2020 and opened up retail locations later that year.

Since NH online sports betting was the first to launch, remote registration was available to residents or visitors of the state. That rule is still in effect, and customers don’t ever have to step foot in a retail sportsbook.

The Brook Casino was the site of the first retail sportsbook in the state, but there could eventually be up to 10 retail locations at NH casinos.

NH Sports Betting Rules

New Hampshire was one of the first states to legalize sports betting after the US Supreme Court lifted the federal ban. Since this was the case, NH sports betting helped to set a precedent in terms of sports betting rules.

One of the rules that were established was that betting on in-state college teams or events is prohibited. Several other states have adopted this rule as a way to keep the integrity of collegiate sporting events.

Betting on both professional and international sporting events is allowed in NH, and DraftKings Sportsbook will feature both types of markets on its site or at the retail sportsbooks.

New Hampshire sports betting does not have any specific language that discusses betting on esports markets.

NH Sports Betting Regulations

The New Hampshire State Lottery oversees and regulates the sports betting industry, as that was included in the bill to legalize sports betting. Sports betting was initially attached to a much larger gambling expansion bill, but it was eventually separated out.

Governor Chris Sununu officially signed H480 into law in July 2019, and he placed the first official bet on December 30 of that year. Full online sports betting went into effect at the beginning of 2020, and both mobile and retail betting was included.

Summary

Even though there is just one New Hampshire online sports betting option, DraftKings Sportsbook is one of the best in the industry. Unlike in other states with just one option, customers are still getting the best odds, and there are plenty of promotions available.

New retail sports betting sites are expected to launch in 2021 and beyond, and that will give bettors in the state even more options. The state has done well since launching sports betting in 2019, but NH continues to look for more revenue from the industry.

The New England region is expected to see plenty of growth in sports betting over the next few years, and that could put some pressure on NH lawmakers to make some changes to the industry.
