Online sports betting in Michigan was legalized in December 2019 as one part of a three item iGaming package that also included online casino gaming and online poker.
In-person wagering in Michigan would begin as early as March 2020, with the state’s first ever legal action placed at a series of commercial casinos in Detroit. The timing for the launch was rather unfortunate, as the COVID-19 pandemic would force all retail casinos to temporarily shut down shortly after opening. This lead to a hankering for online sports betting to launch in the state.
November 2020 was the original target date for online wagering after the pandemic struck, but it took the Michigan Gaming Control Board quite some time to get that part of the industry up and running.
Finally on January 22, 2021, Michigan officially gave online operators the green light to begin offering their services in The Great Lakes State. Household names such as FanDuel, BetMGM, BetRivers, Caesars, and DraftKings were live and open for business on Day 1 and numerous other bookmakers have followed. As one of the biggest and most lucrative markets in the United States, the iGaming scene in Michigan isn’t even close to reaching its peak.
The sports betting laws are very favorable in Michigan, and bettors have a number of available betting markets and bet types available. Michigan sports betting has gotten off to a promising start thus far and 2022 is expected to provide even bigger numbers.

Retail Sportsbooks
Both commercial and tribal casinos in Michigan were able to apply for a sports betting license, which increased the number of potential retail sportsbooks moving online. There are just three commercial casinos in the state of Michigan, and all of these properties are located in Detroit. The decision to allow tribal casinos to open and operate retail sportsbooks only expanded the state’s range and opened up betting opportunities for more players than ever imaginable.
Placing any wagers at a retail sportsbook does not require you to sign up for an account or submit any personal information. You can simply show up and begin placing bets on the same day, no registration necessary.
These retail sportsbooks are available for anyone physically at that property, and you don’t have to be a resident of the state to bet. Here are some of the top retail sportsbooks in the MI sports betting industry:

Location services must be enabled on your mobile device to ensure that you are betting at one of the online sportsbooks from within the state. If you have already created an account at one of the state’s retail sportsbooks, the same account info should work with the provider’s online sportsbook.
